Akrai: on the footsteps of Siracusa!
The first thing you notice is an ancient Roman road, straight and still perfectly paved, lost in the field.
It makes you think that, right where it ends, an invisible portal might take you back in time.
And, yes, visiting Akrai is precisely this: a journey back in time, from the age of Siculi who dominated immense territories, to the arrival of the Greek conquerors, when Sicily was upset by fights and power games, and Siracusa became one of the greatest towns of the Mediterranean Sea. Then the Arabs pounced like wolves on Akrai and, shrouded by the folds of their cloaks and by the smoke of the raids, it went lost forever.
But not its memory, still alive at the beginning of the 1800 when the Baron Judica started his search. He was kind a local Indiana Jones, and he brought to the light the lost town during a long season of explorations and archaeological excavations.
While you adventure between the ruins, you are surprised by the silence and you realize to breathe the finest and purest air.
There is a theatre, not very large but still beautiful in its simplicity.
It bends as if to hug you while you linger on the same seats where noblemen and famous characters used to attend the show.
And there is a bouleuterion, an ancient parliament, where the most important decisions were taken and they used to discuss about the government of Akrai.
A few steps further, the quarries later turned into a necropolis keep a fascinating world made of ancient traditions and… magic!
